Erin The Caterpillar → Butterfly

Friendly Wall v004 | Bespoke Games + Sideways Rocking Chair + More

Erin The Caterpillar → Butterfly is a cute and joyful playsculpture that has the superpower of infinitely transforming into new configurations as well as consists of gamified components. As a sculpture it’s a cute caterpillar, but it becomes a butterfly once you embed function, a metaphor we adore as a principle for our design practice!

Friendly Research

Continuing our investigation of how to make a wall friendly, the wall is brightly colored to stand out, offers people the chance to constantly play with its orientation and composition - all components work in plan and elevation - and has new takes on traditional games packed into its design. The wall serves as a social connector. Additionally, continuing our overall investigation of friendliness, traditional games are offered with unique twists allowing people new ways to play old games!

Building off existing Friendly research, FW v004 tests 2 new spatial strategies to promote Friendliness.

Objective 1: Make the wall mobile. Provide more flexibility for users and more customization of one’s environment.

Strategic Response: The wall is composed in modular parts so that it can be easily distributed across a space as well as brought to new places. Parts are light and smaller so that they can be moved, but, in true teamwork fashion, they require 2 people to move.

Takeaway: I like to move it move it! We like to, move it! It’s super fun being able to move to manipulate your environment.

Objective 2: Make the wall softer and squishier.

Strategic response: Change materiality to medium and high density foam wrapped in colorful fabrics.

Takeaway: It’s fun to lean and plop on the wall!

Erin the Caterpillar → Butterfly is a softer, mobile expression of Friendliness, and is an ideal spot for some Friendly competition!
