Sawsun “Sneaks”
Friendly Wall v004 | Retail Community Hybrid Pop Up + More
Sawsun “Sneaks Summer Classic” activation is named after the Sneaks Summer Classic, an annual community basketball tournament at the La Jolla Rec Center. To complement the high level of basketball, Friendly Futures designed a retail community hybrid pop up to display clothing and the tournament bracket, that also served as a participatory art activation, where everyone at the event would have the opportunity to connect with San Diego basketball culture, even if they don’t jump high enough to play in the tournament :)
Friendly Research
Continuing our investigation of how to make a wall friendly, the wall is brightly colored to stand out, dramatically slopes and shifts opacities for more attention, and then has playful openings to further arouse interest and curiosity. The wall serves as a social connector via hosting the tournament bracket for every player to take a portrait commemorating the day with their loved ones, offers mini hoops for kids (and adults!) to shoot a basketball, and displays merch from local vendors.
Building off existing Friendly research, FW v003 tests 2 new spatial strategies to promote Friendlyness.
Objective 1: Integrate pattern, symbols, and 2D complexity into Friendly Wall.
Strategic Response: Commission an artist - Mckenzie Knapp of Versed and Varied - to paint a mural that ties together (literally with a shoelace) the various uses of the design.
Takeaway: Our Friendly Walls are great opportunities to commission more art!
Objective 2: Invite more opportunities for everyone to tap into the creative process.
Strategic response: Allocate a focal point of the wall for a participatory and interactive mural experience. Later, we would take this wall to our showroom and use the entire wall for a painting party where we partnered people randomly and offered the prompt to discuss a childhood activity or story that is relevant to you today.
Takeaway: Painting parties are a vibeeeeeeee!!!!!!!
Sawsun “Sneaks Summer Classic” activation is another friendly wall as well as an awesome case study into bringing more art, and artists (professional and amateur) into the creative process!
